Shakespearean Sonnets

This unit in my Drama class, we one of Shakespeare's more well known plays, The Taming Of The Shrew. The play takes place in Padua where we are introduced to two sisters, Bianca and Kate. As we soon find out they are both very different, Bianca is the well behaved “perfect” younger sister whereas Kate is loud mouthed and not as well behaved leading to many referring to her as a “shrew”. Throughout the story it is mostly men trying to get married to Bianca while some pretend to be others and while a young man named Petruchio tries to “tame” Kate. He does this as marrying her comes with various benefits such as riches. It is portrayed in such a way where Petruchio quite literally kills Kate with fake kindness until she finally decides fighting him is not really worth it and she turns into the desired wife that many wish. Overall the play is filled with comedy, twists and turns, and some very questionable moments.

After reading the play we were asked to write our own shakespearean sonnet. Meaning it could only be 14 lines, 10 syllables in each line, and it would have an abab rhyming scheme. This sonnet would be dedicated to any chosen character from the play, so I decided to choose none other than Petruchio. I decided to call him out on his behavior and maybe what he could do to get better. I will now show you my final product;

(source, Wikipedia, taming of the shrew)

To the one that goes by Petruchio

I do write to thee a quaint character

Thy performance taming a once called shrew

Want equal rights as thou has mimicked her

Thou art a zany honey-tongued serpent

Massacred poor Kate with kindness did you

Acted like a cunning child, unpleasant

All for the purpose of taming a shrew

Quote I the knave by the name of Curtis

“By this reck‘ning he is more shrew than she”

A mad man did thee become on purpose

A man who called the sun a moon, oh ghee

Thou can be better, a man that is true

All you must do? serve her as she serves you.
