$64 Million Dollars for Your Thoughts: Chicago Park Districts New Headquarters and the Southwest Community
These first few weeks into my senior year I have been taking a Journalism class. Throughout these last few weeks we have learned about news literacy and how to identify bias in the news sources we take in. Everyday we are bombarded with information and are left to fend for ourselves in a sea of endless words being thrown at us, So it is highly important to be able to have the tools to identify which information is unbiased, factual, and not being thrown at us with an agenda. Along with an introduction to news literacy we also watched a film, Spotlight, as an introduction to investigative journalism. Here we watched how much work and even struggle it can be to get the truth out there when the wrong people are on the opposite side of you. This film left us thinking deeply about the situations journalist often have to go through to get a truthful story out.
With this in our minds we were asked to investigate our own story based on a current event in our communities. When we were assigned this, I immediately thought about the new Chicago Park Districts Headquarters being built down in the southwest communities of Chicago. Being a resident of Gage Park I've often felt as we aren't involved much in the final says of big city projects in our community. With this in mind I got to investigating and wrote my own article on the subject. Below is my article:
